Third Reading: Mr Tiger Goes Wild

The purpose of this reading is to bring everything together: the text, the vocabulary, and the illustrations. The discussion and activity options focus on analyzing the main idea, theme, character traits, setting and how all of the story elements fit together.

During this reading your child and you will read the story all the way through. Three ways that you can add fun and improve recall during this reading are:

~You may switch roles and become the listener and the questioner as your child “reads”(retells) the story to you.

~Your child and you may alternate the pages you read to each other.

~One of you can be the narrator, and one of you can be Mr. Tiger. If you’re Mr. Tiger enjoy the roaring!

DISCUSSION OPTIONS:

~What does it mean to “go”wild? What caused Mr. Tiger to “go”wild? Did he choose a wise course of action?

~Do you think Mr. Tiger and his friends have learned a lesson about being themselves? Explain.

~What could Mr. Tiger have done to be happy if there wasn’t a wilderness area near by?

~When is it important to act properly, and when do you have freedom to act as you choose?

ACTIVITY OPTIONS:

~ Reread Im Bored, a November, 2013 Practickle selection. Both the little girl and Mr. Tiger are bored. Who do you think solved the boredom problem in a positive way: the girl, Mr. Tiger, or both of them?

~Let’s write a summary of this short story with such a big message. Mr. Tiger is the subject/topic of the story. What is the main idea of the story? (What does the story tell us about Mr. Tiger?) Add some key details to help explain the main idea of the story. Write your summary on story paper, and draw your favorite picture of Mr. Tiger going wild.
