The purpose of this reading is to bring everything together: the text, the vocabulary, and the illustrations. The discussion and activity options focus on analyzing the main idea, theme, character traits, setting and how all of the story elements fit together.
During this reading your child and you will read the story all the way through. Two ways that you can add fun and improve recall during this reading are:
~You may switch roles and become the listener and the questioner as your child “reads”(retells) the story to you.
~Your child and you may alternate the pages you read to each other.
DISCUSSION OPTIONS:
~How would you describe Henry’s character traits? Give examples from the text to support your opinions.
~What do you notice about each of the monsters that Henry encounters as he searches for adventure? Are they alike in any way?
~Have you ever had an adventure? If yes, write about it. Use some of the new vocabulary words that Mr. Kraegel used in the text.
~Do you think that Henry will continue his search for adventure? Explain your answer.
ACTIVITY OPTIONS:
~ Learning about King Arthur: “Was Arthur a true, historical figure or only a hero of legend? This is truly up to each and every one of us to decide for ourselves. Arthur represents a man who was the epitome of good against evil, light against darkness, and that eternal, never-ending struggle between what is right and that which is wrong.”- Quoted from www.kingarthursknights.com. Learn the legends of King Arthur since he does come up in literature frequently. It will help to explain why Henry imagines being his great…………..great grandson.
~Henry and his new friends might seek a new adventure. Write and illustrate where Henry goes next and who he meets. Use some of your new vocabulary words.
