Third Reading: Infinity and Me

The purpose of this reading is to bring together the information in the text and the illustrations. The discussion and activity options focus on analyzing the main idea, theme, character traits, setting and how all of the story elements fit together.

During this reading your child and you will read the story all the way through. Three ways that you can add fun and improve recall during this reading are:
~You may switch roles and become the listener and the questioner as your child “reads” (retells) the story to you. Assist your child in matching the retelling of the story to the illustration. Help your child pay attention to the details in the illustration to know when to turn the page.

~Your child and you may alternate the pages you “read” to each other.
~You may be Uma, reading her thoughts and questions. Your child may be the people who respond to Uma’s queries about infinity.

DISCUSSION OPTIONS:
~Discuss the meaning of the title. What might you have titled this book?
~After thinking about the information that Uma received from people how do you think she would explain infinity to you?
~Think about Buzz Lightyear’s famous saying: “To infinity and beyond!” Is that possible?
~Enjoy reading the Author’s Note (found after the story), either on your own or with your child. It’s great!

ACTIVITY OPTIONS:
~Ask people that you know how they imagine or see infinity. Write down their answers and illustrate them.
~Read the wonderful book, How Much Is a Million by David Schwartz. This humorous book was written over twenty years ago and is still popular!
