The purpose of this reading is to bring everything together: the text, the vocabulary, and the illustrations. The discussion and activity options focus on analyzing the main idea, theme, character traits, setting and how all of the story elements fit together.
During this reading your child and you will read the story all the way through. Two ways that you can add fun and improve recall during this reading:
~You may switch roles and become the listener and the questioner as your child “reads”(retells) the story to you.
~Your child and you may alternate the pages you read to each other.
DISCUSSION OPTIONS:
~ Discuss the use of imagination. When do people use their imaginations? Connect to times that you have used your imagination.
~What are some of Corduroy’s personality traits? (nice, brave, smart, loving) Connect your personality traits to Corduroy’s. What personality trait helps Corduroy the most? Explain.
~How might Corduroy know about mountains, palaces, and homes?
~Would you have chosen Corduroy without a button?
ACTIVITY OPTIONS:
~Write a story about Corduroy and Lisa. Illustrate it. What personality traits does Corduroy show in your story?
~Read A Pocket for Corduroy, an adventure with Corduroy and Lisa in a laundromat. Again, Mr. Freeman chooses simple values (kindness, friendship) to drive his plot. Lisa is older, but still loves to play with Corduroy. If you don’t have access to this book, check out A Pocket for Corduroy on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgvFZy4sloo.
