The focus of this reading is to read the story and talk about new vocabulary. There will be opportunities in this reading to connect the information in the illustrations to the information in the text.
The text and vocabulary are simple. Many of the inferences that you made during the First Reading will be validated by the text. Due to the simplicity of the text, you may wish to combine the Second and Third Readings.

Pages 5 – 9:
~Why didn’t any of the shoppers want to buy Corduroy?
~Is Corduroy a new bear? How could he have lost his button?
Pages 10 – 15:
~Why did the escalator remind Corduroy of a mountain?
~Had Corduroy ever been on this floor of the store before? Explain your answer.
~What is a palace? What stories can you think of that take place in a palace? Why does this floor remind Corduroy of a palace?
Pages 16 – 19:
~toppled: to tumble over or fall down. Corduroy doesn’t look like he is hurt after he toppled off the mattress. Why?
Pages 20 – 25:
~On page 20, night watchman: person who guards a building at night.
~On page 20, rounds: to go from one place to another and repeat the pattern. What does “going his rounds”mean?
~ How is a night watchman different from a policeman?
Pages 26 – END:
~On page 29, flight of stairs: a set of steps between one floor and the next.
~Are Corduroy and Lisa really talking to each other? (There is no definitive answer. Answer will differ from child to child.)
