First Reading: The Grouchy Ladybug

To allow the brain to focus on the information in the illustrations this reading will look only at the illustrations and the information they provide the young reader. There are no right or wrong answers in this reading.

~Copyright Page: Read the information at the top of the copyright page about aphids and ladybugs.

Instead of page numbers, the page references will be the clocks in the upper right or left corner of each page spread.

Night Scene and 5:00

~In the night scene, there are neither ladybugs nor aphids. Why not? Do you recognize the bugs in the night scene?

~What is happening at 5:00? (The aphids and the ladybugs are out. The aphids are getting ready to suck the liquids from the leaves. The ladybugs are coming to eat the aphids.)

~Which one of these ladybugs is the grouchy ladybug? Explain.

~Why might the ladybug be grouchy?

6:00 – 4:00

~Always note the time on each page.

~As you look at these pages, note the movement of the sun through the sky as the day progresses. At noon, the sun is at its height. (Another science concept imbedded in the lovely illustrations.)

~Notice that as the pages get bigger, so does the new character from the world of nature.

~Do you recognize any of these new characters?

~What might the characters be saying to each other?

5:00 – 5:45

~It is now 5:00, again. Each day has two 5:00’s. Which 5:00 do you think this one is: 5:00 in the morning or 5:00 in the evening?

~These pages show fifteen minute intervals. Where is the ladybug at 5:00, 5:15, 5:30, and 5:45? What is Mr. Carle showing us about the whale?

6:00

~It is now 6:00, again. Each day has two 6:00’s. Which 6:00 do you think this one is: 6:00 in the morning or 6:00 in the evening?

~What are the two ladybugs saying to each other? Which one is the grouchy ladybug?

~What has happened to the grouchy ladybug? What do you think might have changed the grouchy ladybug?

END:

~What is the difference between this illustration and the illustration at the beginning of the story?

~What might the ladybugs be saying to each other?

Looking back at the illustrations, what parts of the illustrations are true about animals? What parts of the illustrations are imagined.
