To allow the brain to focus on the information in the photographs, this reading will look only at the photographs and the information they provide to the reader. There are no right or wrong answers in this reading. For this guide, we will be enjoying the section titled “the little ones”. The questions that are provided for this section will work for each of the nine sections of poetry.
General Questions for Each Section and Page: “The Little Ones” page 38
1. Look at the title page of the section. What do we see in the photograph that we can connect to the title of the section? (a little bee and a little ant)
2. For each photograph in the section:
~ Identify the animal, insect, bird, etc. in the photograph. (The name is provided.)
~ What do we already know about this animal, insect, etc.?
3. This photograph is chosen for a reason. The photograph shows us special things about the animal, insect, etc.
What is the photograph telling us about the animal, insect, etc. that the poet might put into a poem?
For example: page 40.
1. Identify the insects pictured. (Leafcutter ants and a ladybug)
2. What do we already know about ants?
3. What do we already know about ladybugs?
4. What are the ants doing in the photograph? What might the poet think is important about the ants in this photograph? (The ants are working hard. The ants are working together.)
5. What might the poet think is important about this picture of the ladybug? (This is a simple photograph of a ladybug. Maybe the poet is going to describe the ladybug.)
For example, page 41.
1. Identify the insect pictured. (an ant)
2. What do we already know about ants?
3. What is the photograph’s focus? (This photograph seems to focus on the ant’s head and body.)
4. Based on the photograph, what might the poet say about this ant in the poem?

1. Identify the insect pictured.
2. What do you already know about damselflies?
3. What seems to be the important parts of the photograph?
4. Based on the photograph, what might the poet want to say about the damselfly?
